What’s the secret to slimming down?

Even when you are super disciplined and committed to your weight-loss plan, it can be difficult to actually slim down, and the end goal of fitting into your favorite clothes again can be a long, hard uphill battle.

So what’s the secret to really slimming down?

“Slimming down requires, first and foremost, high-quality lean protein,” says Bob Carrara, a diabetes educator at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, Ill.

Carrara offers 10 go-to foods to help you stay on track and meet your goals:

  1. Egg whites
  2. Low-fat cheese
  3. Plain Greek yogurt 
  4. Kefir (a cultured milk product that has more probiotics than yogurt)
  5. Fat-free milk
  6. Plain soy milk
  7. Skinless chicken
  8. Fish
  9. Pork tenderloin
  10. Beans and lentils

“Beans and lentils are excellent sources of fiber, iron and potassium,” Carrara explains. “They also contain carbohydrates, but have a very low glycemic index, which can produce a more gradual rise and fall in blood glucose levels.”

  4. This is not a great list of foods. I particularly have an issue with skim milk, soy, and pork. First, consider the skim milk. There is a common mistake that people make thinking that fat makes people fat… this is incorrect, sugars make you fat. The process of “skimming” milk to remove the fat leave milk relatively unpalatable so sugar is added. There is about twice the amount of sugar in skim milk as there is in full fat cream. Also, skimming the fat reduces nutritional value because certain fat soluble vitamins are removed in the process of skimming. Saturated fats, such as those in milk, can be problematic in high volumes but in lower volumes it helps glycemic values in blood.
    Many of the more popular preparations for pork tends to use a lot of salt, which is problematic for people with high blood pressure. Consuming pork is also said to slow digestion, which can adversely effect fruits and vegetables as they are more likely to form alcohols when breaking down slowly. Pig farming creates a lot of possibly dangerous waste. Larger pig farms have to use holding ponds for the waste or have it hauled away as toxic waste. This is in large part volume of pig waste but is also the nature of pig waste in general.
    Finally, soy, which can be a good addition to diet should be consumed in moderation. They produce non-steroidal hormones that are similar to estrogens in the human body. which have been linked to issues with infertility and cancers in both men and women. They can inhibit the body’s ability to absorb minerals and trace minerals, as well as, reducing the bodies ability to digest proteins. Finally, enzymes in soy can cause thyroid issues in humans.
    Two important concepts that are often overlooked or ignored when it comes to health and/or dieting. First, balance. Good balanced diets focused on fruits, vegetables and grains is better than focus on just a few foods eat. Ensuring that one has a well balanced diet will reduce the deficiencies in vitamins and minerals and aid in overall health. Second, moderation, even “bad” foods aren’t that bad in moderation. Consumption of red wine has been linked to heart health but if you consume a bottle a day then you are going to damage your liver. The same goes for most foods.
