This subject may turn your relationship toxic
There are a couple things a spouse could say to his or her mate that would be like dropping a bomb into the relationship.
One is, “I don’t love you anymore.”
The other is, “Gee, sweetie, maybe you need to lose a few pounds.”
Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but the point is, when talking about your partner’s weight, you’re playing with dynamite. So how can you support your spouse without hurting their feelings if you really love them, really care about their health and think they should adopt healthier eating and exercise habits?
The best answer is for both of you to maintain healthy habits and to support each other to stay on track. So how do you accomplish this?
We put that question to Joe Ozanic, a personal trainer and nutrition specialist at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital Health & Fitness Center in Barrington, Ill., asking him for three suggestions. Here are his ideas:
1. “Spouses can agree to work out together. Even if you don’t work out together, setting a good example by following your own workout plan can be powerful.”
2.“A spouse can cook a favorite healthy post-workout meal to show their support.”
3. Turn meal preparation into a fun weekend date. “My wife and I prepare healthy lunches for the week every Sunday to set ourselves up for success.”
Bottom line: A healthy lifestyle doesn’t happen in a vacuum. You have to be there for each other. Because really, sweetie, maybe you could stand to lose a few pounds, too.
