The link between your birth month and your health

If you bruise often, have ADHD or even prostate cancer, there could be a connection to the month you were born.

In a study of 1.7 million patients treated at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center from 1985 to 2013, study leaders determined that there was a link between 55 diseases and the month the patient was born. Sixteen of these correlations had not been discovered in previous studies, and nine were linked to different types of heart disease.

“It’s important not to get overly nervous about these results because even though we found significant associations, the overall disease risk is not that great,” said Dr. Nicholas Tatonetti, assistant professor of biomedical informatics at Columbia University Medical Center and Columbia’s Data Science Institute, in a news release. “The risk related to birth month is relatively minor when compared to more influential variables like diet and exercise.”

Findings included that those born in the month of May were least likely to develop chronic health conditions, while those born in October were more prone to health issues.

Some other connections included:

  • ADHD and viral infections are most common among those born in November
  • Asthma is more likely for people with September birthdays
  • High blood pressure is linked to January births
  • Lung and bronchial tumors, as well as, choking were linked to February birthdays
  • Congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation were more common for those born in March
  • Nausea was most common for those born in September
  • Bruising is most common for December birthdays

Incorporating healthy lifestyle choices at an early age can help prevent many chronic health conditions. It is important that parents try and incorporate these habits starting at a young age. To do this, Dr. Aaron Traeger, a pediatrician at Advocate Bromenn Medical Center in Normal, Ill., encourage parents to “focus on your health and apply those same principles to your family. Do not make special meals for certain members of the family, everyone eats the same healthy meals.”
