Are you familiar with these common drowning locations?

Cooling off in the pool is the hallmark of summer family fun. But time spent in the water comes with risks. In fact, drowning is the leading cause of death for children in the U.S., according to the American Red Cross. And for babies and little kids, sources of water beyond swimming pools can prove hazardous.
“Drowning can happen quickly and quietly, even in very shallow water,” explains Dr. Kay Jacobs, a pediatric critical care medicine physician at Advocate Children’s Hospital. “Being extra mindful of lesser-known common drowning locations – such as buckets that haven’t been emptied and open toilets – is key to keeping curious kids away from dangerous situations.”
Behind pools and hot tubs, bathtubs are the most likely drowning location. The American Red Cross says other common drowning locations for infants and toddlers include:
- Bath seats
- Wells and cisterns
- Septic tanks
- Decorative ponds
Babies under one year old are also more likely to drown at home, underscoring why it’s so important to still keep your guard up in familiar surroundings.
“Prevention and supervision are the best ways to reduce drowning risk, especially for babies and children who may not understand water safety,” Dr. Jacobs says.
Parents and caregivers should identify risks around their homes so preventive measures can be put in place. Home safety gear, like stair gates and knob covers, can block access to bathrooms or the outside, while locked sheds and fencing can keep outdoor sources of water out of reach.
Additionally, learning specific skills in the event of a water emergency can mean the difference between a close call and a tragedy. Dr. Jacobs recommends brushing up on CPR and first aid so you are confident in handling scary situations.
“Community organizations, such as your fire department or local hospital, often offer classes for parents or other caregivers,” she says.
