Is breast reduction surgery the relief you need?

For many women, having large breasts is more than just a cosmetic issue; it can cause daily pain and frustration. Fortunately, breast reduction surgery provides women a chance to live more comfortably.
Some women choose to have breast reduction surgery because they feel insecure about the appearance of their breasts or are emotionally drained by the daily struggle to find breast support — sometimes wearing multiple bras just to feel comfortable.
“Large breasts can also lead to posture problems, rashes and wounds,” says Dr. Michael Ogilvie, a plastic surgeon at Advocate Health Care. “They also make it harder to stay active, which can contribute to weight gain and affect both their physical and mental health.”
He says while there isn’t one specific reason patients come in for breast reduction surgery, it can provide long-term relief for the right candidate. Candidates are typically healthy women with a BMI under 35 who face physical or social issues due to their breast size.
The procedure involves removing between 30% to 50% of breast volume, resulting in smaller, lighter and more lifted breasts. Many women assume they can choose their new cup size, but this isn’t the case. Instead, surgeons prioritize reducing volume safely, not targeting a clothing size.
Plastic surgeons are also commonly asked whether the surgery involves removing the nipples. In most cases, the nipples aren’t removed. In rare occurrences where nipple repositioning is needed, it will be discussed in advance.
Recovery involves avoiding heavy lifting, strenuous activity and raising arms overhead for about a month. Most women return to desk jobs in one to two weeks and can usually start driving within a week.
“Surgery isn’t a quick fix, and there are always risks,” Dr. Ogilvie says. “But in my practice, over 95% of patients report improved quality of life.”
If you are wondering if breast reduction surgery could help you live more comfortably, the first step toward relief is having an open conversation with a trusted health care provider.
