Should you hit the gym while pregnant?
Pregnancy brings a whirlwind of changes. For starters, you may have cravings that can strike at any time. You also may find it difficult to find exercises that accommodate a growing belly. But proper nutrition and exercise are crucial for a healthy pregnancy.
Nutrition while pregnant
“Pregnancy increases the body’s nutritional requirements needed to support fetal development and maternal health,” says Dr. Colleen Skay, an OB-GYN physician at Advocate Health Care. “It’s essential you take prenatal vitamins to help make sure you have an adequate intake of important vitamins and minerals. However, the vitamins might not include everything needed for a healthy mom and baby.”
Specifically, Dr. Skay says key nutrients, like folic acid, iron and calcium, are vital for a healthy pregnancy.
“Having a general awareness of calories and seeking support from a dietitian can help pregnant women make healthier choices,” she says.
Ideal nutrition also varies between trimesters of pregnancy. In your third trimester, you need more calories in comparison to your first trimester to accommodate the growing baby and changes in your own body.
Exercise while pregnant
Regular exercise during pregnancy offers many benefits, including improved mood, enhanced sleep, reduced back pain and a smoother labor and delivery.
“I recommend consulting with a health care provider before starting or continuing an exercise routine,” says Dr. Skay. “Certain activities might be unsafe, like horseback riding, scuba diving or rock climbing. But generally, we encourage patients to continue moderate exercise.”
As the pregnancy continues, it’s important to stay hydrated and take preventive measures to avoid injury. Gentle stretching can alleviate pregnancy-related discomforts and it’s essential to listen to your body, rest when needed and avoid overexertion.
If you are aware of a chronic medical condition, Dr. Skay encourages you to ask your primary care provider what precautions you should take to have a safe pregnancy.
