Have you heard of the Cookie Challenge?

Three cookies. Three people. But your child has two, your spouse has one and you have none. What would your child do?

That’s the answer many parents want to know as they participate in the internet’s viral “Cookie Challenge.” In the experiment, two parents and one toddler each have something covered up on a table in front of them. Everyone takes turns uncovering their treat, revealing that one person in the group is left without a cookie. Will the child choose to share their extra cookie?

Some children might, while others may enjoy their cookies without any concern for the parent without one. In one “Cookie Challenge” social media video, the toddler suggests the parent with a cookie share their single cookie with the other parent.

Dr. Hollis Redmon, a pediatrician at Advocate Children’s Hospital, says no matter a child’s reaction to the “Cookie Challenge,” parents should not be concerned. “Children begin to understand the concept of sharing around ages 3 to 4, but, even at that age, they haven’t really mastered it,” she says.

Dr. Redmon reminds parents that children learn well from modeling behavior. “So, if they see successful sharing happening, they will have a better understanding of it,” she says. “When your child does share something with a peer, younger sibling or a parent, be sure to acknowledge their actions and respond positively to help reinforce the behavior.”

If you decide to try the “Cookie Challenge” at home, remember that a social media trend about sharing does not predict your child’s future capacity to share or show empathy.

“These skills are a moving target that evolves with your child, so don’t be too hard on yourself or them if they decide not to share the cookie — especially if they have a sweet tooth!”
