Why wire grill brushes may ruin your cookout

As summer temperatures heat up, so do the backyard barbecues. However, a common cleaning tool could be putting your health at risk.
There are growing concerns about the safety of wire grill brushes as more cases have been linked to a disturbing number of injuries. When metal bristles break off and adhere to food, they can be accidentally ingested, leading to severe health risks.
“When wire bristles detach from grill brushes, they pose a significant risk to the digestive system,” says Dr. Kristopher J. Wnek, an emergency medicine physician at Aurora Health Care. “Even a small piece can cause severe internal injury, often requiring surgery to remove it.”
Wire grill brushes are typically made with stainless steel bristles that are tightly wound and affixed to a handle. While effective at cleaning, these brushes have a significant flaw – the bristles can detach during use. Once dislodged, they can become embedded in food cooked on the grill. Ingesting even a small bristle can cause injuries ranging from minor oral wounds to life-threatening internal damage.
While such severe cases are relatively rare, they are not isolated incidents.
The American Medical Association has issued warnings about the potential dangers of wire-bristle grill brushes. They recommend that consumers inspect their grills before cooking and consider using alternative cleaning methods to reduce the risk of injury.
To mitigate the risks associated with wire grill brushes, several safer cleaning options are available:
- Bristle-free brushes: These brushes use materials like nylon or silicone that do not shed bristles.
- Grill stones: Made from pumice or other abrasive materials, these stones can effectively clean grill grates without the risk of bristle ingestion.
- Aluminum foil balls: Crumpled aluminum foil can be used to scrub the grill grates, removing debris without leaving behind harmful particles.
- Ceramic grill scrapers: These tools conform to the shape of the grill grates, providing a thorough clean without shedding materials.
“If a wire brush is the only option, it’s crucial to inspect the grill thoroughly for any loose bristles before cooking,” Dr. Wnek adds. “Additionally, performing a second cleaning pass with a ball of aluminum foil can help dislodge any remaining bristles. While wire grill brushes are effective tools for maintaining clean grills, their potential to cause serious health injuries cannot be overlooked.”
