New COVID symptom alert: A razor blade sore throat

Just when you thought you had heard it all about COVID, reports of a new symptom are making headlines. The currently circulating COVID strain called Nimbus is causing people to experience a “razor blade” sore throat.

People describe the symptom as a severe sore throat that causes a lot of pain when you swallow. However, you may still experience the other typical COVID symptoms, which include fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue and body aches – to name a few.

“It’s important to make sure your severe sore throat isn’t actually strep throat,” explains Dr. Robert Citronberg, the executive medical director of infectious disease and prevention at Advocate Health Care and Aurora Health Care. “To identify whether the symptom is caused by strep or COVID, schedule an appointment with your doctor so they can look at your throat and take a throat culture, if needed.”

Additionally, you can rule out COVID with an at-home COVID test.

The “razor blade” sore throat variant does appear to be more contagious than other COVID strains due to the many mutations of the spike protein.

“The Nimbus COVID strain does appear to be more transmissible, but its overall symptoms are typically mild and not life-threatening or requiring hospitalization for most individuals,” says Dr. Citronberg.

To protect yourself from COVID, maintain proper handwashing and avoid being around others who are sick. Wearing a mask and prioritizing air ventilation can also limit the spread of germs.

The COVID vaccine also remains a safe and effective option to prevent COVID and minimize its symptoms. It continues to be recommended for children and adults with risk factors that increase their likelihood of experiencing a severe COVID infection.

To learn more about whether a COVID vaccination is right for you, seek individualized guidance from your health care provider.
