How to help your child with health concerns thrive at school

The school year may be in full swing but many parents of children with health conditions are still concerned about their child succeeding in the classroom.
A C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health shows that 44% of parents who have a child with a medical or behavioral condition are worried about their child adjusting to a new school or teacher. They also reported greater concern than parents of children without health conditions about their child’s ability to deal with conflict, fit in, make friends and stay healthy.
“These concerns are valid, but they are exactly why it’s important for parents to connect with teachers and school administrators regarding their child’s individual health needs,” says Dr. Andrea Tekie, a pediatrician at Advocate Children’s Hospital. “In many of these cases, a child will require an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) that outlines necessary services and support a child requires while at school in order to thrive.”
Dr. Tekie offers the following suggestions to help these parents feel better about their child’s time at school:
- Work with your child’s teacher to find a designated method of communication to check in and discuss any concerns or needs. This can be through an app the school uses or designated meetings or phone calls.
- Provide the teacher with a book they can read to the students in your child’s class to help provide context and overall exposure to their medical needs. For example, if your child uses medical equipment, such as a wheelchair or walker, reading an age-appropriate book that explains the purpose of the equipment can help them understand better.
- Reach out to your child’s pediatrician or specialist if you have any worries about your child’s time at school. Together, you will work as a team to make sure your child’s school is prepared to meet their needs and help them have a great school year.
