Why drinking alcohol is going out of style
Americans report drinking less alcohol than ever before. The trend coincides with a growing awareness about the health risks associated with even moderate alcohol consumption.
“Eliminating alcohol is one of the fastest ways to improve your overall health and lose weight,” says Lindsay Fencl, a registered dietitian at Aurora BayCare Medical Center. “Even moderate drinking, or just a couple drinks per month, can interfere with your sleep, muscle recovery, digestion, hormones, cognition and mood. Plus, there are many nonalcoholic alternatives readily available than ever before.”
A few reasons you might consider giving up alcohol:
Drinking less alcohol may improve sleep quality
Though some people say a pint of beer or a glass of wine makes them sleepy, alcohol can actually disrupt overall sleep quality. This results in feeling even more tired the next day.
“Alcohol disrupts REM sleep and leads to more nighttime awakenings – which disrupts memory, emotional regulation, energy levels and metabolic health,” says Fencl.
In fact, alcohol is also tied to breathing problems, like sleep apnea. One study suggests for each alcoholic drink a man has per day, his odds of having breathing problems while sleeping increases by 25%.
Drinking less alcohol helps with weight management
Many people trying to lose weight consider giving up alcohol. Alcohol can slow the metabolism, leading to more calories being stored.
“Alcohol is considered to have empty calories since it’s caloric and lacks nutritional value,” says Fencl. “It can also increase your appetite and lead to eating without restraint or consideration, undermining your best efforts and intentions.”
Drinking less alcohol lowers risk of chronic disease
Decreasing how often you consume alcohol can help prevent a whole host of conditions. The opposite is also true. Having just a drink or two each day can be enough to significantly increase your risk of liver disease.
“Cutting back on alcohol reduces your risk of high blood pressure, certain cancers, liver disease and cardiovascular issues,” says Fencl. “Cancers connected to alcohol use include breast, colorectal, esophagus, voice box, liver, mouth and throat.”
Drinking less alcohol helps you think clearer and improves mood
Some people use alcohol to unwind at the end of the day, but it may have the opposite effect.
“Many people notice reduced anxiety, improved focus and better emotional regulation within just 30 days of quitting drinking,” says Fencl. “Alcohol use can disrupt your neurotransmitters, increasing the likelihood you will feel anxious.”
