Breast cancer survivor honored with day of surprises
In November 2024, Jana Zepeda was diagnosed with breast cancer after undergoing an annual mammogram.
“There was no cancer in my family, so I never expected to be diagnosed,” the mom of two says. “But staying up to date with regular screenings is what caught my cancer, and it’s the reason I’m a survivor.”
She underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation to treat the cancer, completing treatment one year ago. Recently, Aurora Health Care and the Milwaukee Brewers™ teamed up to help Zepeda celebrate her milestone achievement.
She arrived at Aurora West Allis Women’s Pavilion for what she believed was a survivorship event. Instead, everyone had gathered to honor her. Zepeda was greeted by Bernie Brewer™ as well as members of her care team, including Dr. Nicole Zaremba, her breast surgeon.
“Thanks to Jana’s diligence and keeping up with annual screenings, we were able to detect her breast cancer early, leading to a wonderful outcome,” says Dr. Zaremba. “It’s been a pleasure to be a leader on her care team and with her through this journey.”
Bernie Brewer gifted Zepeda, a huge Brewers fan, a wellness basket and gifts, along with a custom Brewers jersey. From there, she and her mom rode in style in a limousine to a spa with Brewers outfielder Blake Perkins and his wife Falyn. The four honored Zepeda’s resilience and enjoyed a day of peace and relaxation after her long cancer treatment journey. She and her family ended the day cheering on the Brewers at American Family Field™ as they faced the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Finally, Zepeda stood proudly alongside eight other inspiring Aurora Health Care breast cancer survivors at the Brewers’ Pink Out Mother’s Day game. Hosted by Aurora Health Care and the Brewers, the game honored mothers and mother figures who are breast cancer fighters and survivors. During the celebration, Zepeda rang the bell to commemorate her completion of cancer treatment.
“I’m super grateful, and I can’t believe it,” Zepeda says. “I just feel so blessed.”
