Here’s how to avoid getting sick from the heat
When summer temperatures spike, so does the number of patients seeking medical treatment for health-related illnesses that may be preventable.
“Because so many of us look forward to the heated days of summer, it’s easy to forget that Chicago’s hot, humid weather can pose as many health challenges as our extremely cold winters,” says registered and certified emergency nurse Michele Kroeger, coordinator of Emergency Medical Services and Emergency Preparedness at Advocate Trinity Hospital in Chicago.
Kroeger says children, older adults and anyone recuperating from chronic illnesses and conditions are especially susceptible to high outdoor temperatures. To help people of all ages avoid heat-related illnesses that often result in trips to the emergency room, Kroeger offers the following tips:
