7.17.17 On This Date In 1984, Congress passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act, which required states to impose a minimum drinking age of 21 as a condition of receiving state highway funds. The effort was aimed at reducing drunk driving. The National Traffic Highway Administration estimates about 900 lives per year have been saved as a result.
