  1. This assumes, of course, that you know *how* to jump rope. Wonder of wonders, I never learned. Nor did I learn to play jacks, marbles, or hopscotch (I grew up in a neighborhood without kids my own age, and my family came from eastern Europe — there’s no tradition of kids jumping rope there). My mother figured that as long as I was happily sitting in a corner with a book and occasionally rode my bike, she didn’t need to worry about me getting into trouble. She was mostly right about that but also kind of wrong. To this day, I can’t jump rope and I’m not a fan of exercise for its own sake; I’d still rather read a book. So thanks, but no thanks — I’ll go back to long walks and riding my bike.
