‘COVID isn’t waiting for the one shot’

With the news that federal regulators could authorize a third COVID-19 vaccine soon, you might be wondering which one to get when it eventually your turn to get a shot.

Experts say the answer is simple: Whichever one is available to you.

Dr. Jacqueline Ivey-Brown, an internal medicine physician based in Oak Lawn, says some of her patients have said they’re waiting to get vaccinated until the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine is available. The already-approved Pfizer and Moderna vaccines each take two shots.

Dr. Ivey-Brown is encouraging people not to wait.

“COVID isn’t waiting for the one shot,” she said during a Facebook Live discussion this week. “So as soon as you have the ability to get vaccinated, get vaccinated.”

Executive Medical Director of Infectious Disease and Prevention Dr. Robert Citronberg agreed.

“Totally agree, take the first vaccine that’s available to you,” he said.

Finding a vaccine dose might be difficult right now, as hospitals, doctors, pharmacies and counties wait for more supply to be available. Experts are urging patience, expecting supply to pick up soon and doses to become more available. Already, more people have received at least one dose of vaccine than have tested positive for COVID-19, and statistics on new cases, hospitalizations and deaths have dropped.

“We just want people to be patient. You will get your vaccine,” Dr. Citronberg said.

The experts made these comments during a Facebook Live event, when they answered viewer questions about vaccines, COVID-19, masks and other issues. You can watch the discussion on Facebook, or the full video is available below.

  1. I don’t understand why the city/state is opening up to the next level for shots. I’m 69 and have not been given a time for the vaccine. What is going on with the city/state guidelines that they are opening up for others when there isn’t enough for those that are now eligible.

I am 67 and has kidney d. I have a vaccine code on the wait list but can’t use it at my doctors office to make arrangement to get vaccine, everywhere that I see. Vaccines are not available.

  16. Can only receive the Johnson and Johnson Covid 19 vaccine. I’ve heard of companies that have had the Johnson and Johnson one several weeks ago and it was given to all their employees and their families, many of them were in their 30’s and no medical conditions. All the vaccination sites have no information about the Johnson and Johnson one and the Lake County Health Department is of no assistance. I’ve called there and spoke to someone and so did a friend of mine and they were rude.
