Have you experienced these lesser-known allergy symptoms?

A runny nose. Sneezing. Congestion. Watery eyes. These are typically the symptoms people think of when it comes to allergies. But there are also other lesser-known allergy symptoms that are quite common, including headaches, swollen lymph nodes and dizziness.

“Allergies are common across our population, but the ways in which each person’s body responds to them can vary,” explains Dr. Oti Otubu-Scipio, a virtual primary care physician at Advocate Health Care and Aurora Health Care. “We often hear from patients that they are experiencing things like itchy eyes and postnasal drip. As the immune system reacts to an allergen, it triggers inflammation that can cause many symptoms throughout the body.”

Lesser-known allergy symptoms
Headaches

When the nasal passages and sinuses become congested and inflamed, some people experience sinus headaches or migraines. Treatment of sinus headaches involves using over-the-counter painkillers, like ibuprofen and acetaminophen, antihistamines, nasal sprays or decongestants. Migraine treatment can be much more complicated and should be discussed with a health care provider.

Swollen lymph nodes

Because allergens trigger an immune response, it’s not uncommon to experience swollen lymph nodes. You can reduce the swelling by taking an over-the-counter allergy medication, gargling with salt water or applying a warm compress.

Dizziness

Experiencing allergy-induced dizziness can happen when the middle ear is blocked by mucus. The Eustachian tube drains fluid from the middle ear and helps regulate balance, so when this is disturbed by a blockage, the body’s balance is disrupted and dizziness can occur. Treatment involves addressing the root cause of the problem – the allergy. Over-the-counter allergy medication, prescription medications, antihistamines and decongestants can help lessen the likelihood of experiencing dizziness from allergies. For more long-term relief, immunotherapy can desensitize the body to allergens.

Do you need help managing your allergies?

“You don’t need to live your life suffering from allergy symptoms,” Dr. Scipio says. “If you are experiencing these symptoms or any others, talk with your doctor, who can develop the appropriate treatment plan for you.”
