Health care heroes: Putting others at ease

For many people, the first sign that a long COVID-19 battle was ahead began when the shelter-in-place order was put into effect in Illinois.

For those on the front lines, it began with increased patient visits, crowding of the emergency rooms, and talks of possible supply shortage. Registered nurse Cassie Santos is a dedicated night charge nurse in the Pediatric Emergency Department at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Park Ridge, dealing with one of the most vulnerable populations.

Cassie has been a night shift leader for nearly four years and is considered a blessing among her colleagues because of her sense of calm in some of the most dire situations.

“Everyone feels at ease when Cassie is working because they know she can handle and lead the team through anything that comes their way,” says Maureen Bentley, RN and Pediatric ED Manager. “Cassie is a true health care hero.”

Cassie’s child-friendly approach to care allows her to create quick bonds with patients and build trust in the unsettling ED environment. Her own family is cheering from the sidelines, waiting for the pandemic to pass so they can finally shower her with hugs and kisses.

Her children, ages 4, 6, and 20, are staying strong, despite the challenges it has presented. The family has made sacrifices to keep everyone safe and healthy, which meant getting creative with social distancing. Pictured is Cassie with her 6-year-old son in blow-up suits to prevent the possible spread of the Coronavirus.

“It can be difficult to explain to your children why you can no longer cuddle, hug or kiss them,” Cassie says. “We try to make it fun and engaging and this was just one idea we recently had and it was the best one yet.”

“No matter how difficult the days may get, never forget why you became a nurse,” she says.
