Health care heroes: Switching to the night shift

“I knew I always wanted to be a nurse to take care of people, but as I became one, I realized there are so many opportunities and an array of settings that nurses can work in,” Carlie Dell explains.

As an emergency department nurse at Aurora Medical Center – Bay Area in Marinette, WI, she is willing to go above and beyond for her team members and patients alike.

In fact, Carlie didn’t have to think twice in the face of a pandemic when she switched to the night shift to fill a growing staffing need in the emergency department and to protect her most vulnerable team members. Putting herself in potential harm’s way to help keep a pregnant coworker safe was a no-brainer.

“We have had to switch shifts around in the ER because of nurses expecting and others with health issues, and we have all come together to change our schedules to fill in open holes,” says Carlie. “More importantly, there have been other nurses from other departments that have come to the ER to pick up open holes and help our department during this uncertain time.”

Carlie is currently pursuing her master’s degree in nursing and is on track to graduate in August 2020.
