The hottest fitness trends for 2015

Cross-fit, high intensity interval training and Zumba have all taken the fitness world by storm over the past few years. In 2015, there is a different workout fad expected to surpass these exercises in popularity.

Body weight training will be the most popular exercise activity, according to the Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends for 2015 conducted by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). This form of exercise first made it onto the ACSM’s list of most popular fitness exercises in 2013 and it has continued to grow in popularity. This could be in part because it is so simple. Body weight training requires minimal equipment and many of the exercises performed are ones that everyone is familiar with such as planks, push-ups, crunches, squats and burpees.

It’s no surprise to see body weight training claiming the top spot this year,” said Walter R. Thompson, PhD, the lead author of the study. “These kinds of exercises provide the benefit of requiring little to no equipment and are incorporated into many fitness programs that are currently popular.”

While body weight training may be the next hot trend, there are several other popular workouts to try out.

According to the survey the top ten most popular fitness trends included:

  1. Body Weight Training
  2. High-Intensity Interval Training
  3. Educated and Experienced Fitness Professionals
  4. Strength Training
  5. Personal Training
  6. Exercise and Weight Loss
  7. Yoga
  8. Fitness Programs for Older Adults
  9. Functional Fitness
  10. Group Personal Training

As you think about picking a workout routine, Amy Hays, a personal trainer at the Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center in Downers Grove, Ill., suggests varying your routine.

“Try and do more sets, add more reps or weight at a rate that is appropriate for you,” she says. “These changes will help you not to reach a plateau which is where your muscles get so use to doing the same thing that you don’t see a change in your body shape.”

In addition, she recommends a few sessions with a knowledgeable trainer. They will be able to write up a progressive program based on your assessment and your particular goals. This way you can get a safe start on incorporating exercise into your life.

One fitness trend that has been popular for a long time is Spinning class, which offers a high intensity, cardio and core strength workout in a group setting to the tune of motivating music and an encouraging spinning coach. The best part about spinning is that it offers a maximum-intensity workout that is low-impact and also strengthens the core. During a spinning session, typically one can burn between 700-900 calories. Look for a spin/cycle class at your local gym!

  6. I think a lot of the popularity of these upcoming trends is in the marketing. I see commercials for body weight training and personal high-intensity interval training quite often. It makes sense these would be popular, given the advantages. I’m going to try both as I get my butt in gear in the New Year!
